Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake nestled in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley at an altitude of approximately 1,890 metres above sea level. Located just 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi — roughly a 90-minute drive — it is one of the most accessible natural destinations in Kenya and makes an ideal addition to any Rift Valley safari circuit. Unlike the alkaline soda lakes that characterise much of the Rift Valley, Naivasha’s freshwater ecosystem supports a remarkably rich and diverse community of wildlife, from large pods of hippopotamus to hundreds of waterbird species, making it one of Kenya’s most ecologically important wetlands.
The lake’s most beloved activity is the boat safari — a gentle, silent journey across the open water that brings you within metres of wallowing hippos, basking on sandbanks or submerged to their eyes in the shallows. African fish eagles — Kenya’s national bird — call with their haunting cry from the papyrus reeds and fever tree canopy that lines the shore, and the water surface is alive with cormorants, pelicans, herons, and kingfishers. For birders, a morning on the lake is one of the richest experiences in East African ornithology.
Crescent Island, accessible by boat from the southern shore, is a unique walking safari destination unlike anywhere else in Kenya. Because there are no predators on the island, visitors are free to walk entirely on foot through open grassland populated by giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, wildebeest, and impalas — coming within touching distance of wildlife in a way that would be impossible in most national parks. This gentle, unmediated encounter with free-roaming wildlife is particularly memorable for families, first-time safari visitors, and anyone who wants to experience animals at eye level rather than through the window of a vehicle.
Nearby Hell’s Gate National Park — one of the very few national parks in Kenya where visitors can enter on foot or by bicycle — offers a completely different kind of adventure. The dramatic gorge of Ol Njorowa cuts through ancient lava columns and red rock walls to create a landscape of extraordinary geological beauty. Cycling through this gorge, with zebras and giraffes grazing on either side of the path, is an experience that combines physical adventure with wildlife immersion in a way that is genuinely unique in Kenya.
The surrounding landscape of volcanic hills, flower farms, and acacia woodland adds to Naivasha’s appeal as a place of tranquillity and natural beauty, making it equally suitable as a standalone retreat or as a restorative overnight stop between more intensive safari legs.
Naivasha is a rewarding year-round destination. June to October and January to February offer drier, more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. The green season from March to May and November brings lush landscapes and exceptional birdwatching.
