Malindi Marine National Park
Malindi Marine National Park is one of Kenya’s oldest marine protected areas, established in 1968 and located along the Indian Ocean coastline near the historic town of Malindi in Kilifi County, approximately 120 kilometres north of Mombasa. The park covers 213 square kilometres of coastal marine environment and protects a richly diverse range of ecosystems including vibrant coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and open ocean habitat. It is the centrepiece of Kenya’s marine conservation effort and one of the finest snorkelling and diving destinations on the East African coast.
The coral reefs of Malindi Marine Park are among the most colourful and ecologically complex in the western Indian Ocean. The park’s protected status means that fishing is prohibited within its boundaries, allowing fish populations to thrive in extraordinary abundance and diversity. Snorkelling over the reef is a sensory revelation — the water is warm and often exceptionally clear, the coral formations are elaborate and varied, and the fish life is almost impossibly vibrant. Parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, groupers, moray eels, and dozens of other species inhabit every crevice and ledge of the reef structure, while sea turtles — including green and hawksbill turtles — glide through the water with unhurried grace.
For certified divers, the park offers deeper reef dives where encounters with reef sharks, eagle rays, and large pelagic species become possible. Seasonal visitors to the area include whale sharks — the world’s largest fish — which pass through the offshore waters between October and February, offering a bucket-list dive encounter of extraordinary scale and gentleness. Glass-bottom boat tours provide a wonderful alternative for those who prefer to stay dry, offering views of the reef and its inhabitants through a transparent hull as guides narrate the ecological story unfolding beneath.
The marine park experience is perfectly complemented by the broader appeal of the Malindi and Watamu coastline. White sandy beaches, traditional dhow sailing excursions, dolphin watching trips, and turtle conservation programs add further dimensions to a coastal stay. The historic town of Malindi itself — one of the oldest trading settlements on the East African coast — offers cultural richness through its Swahili architecture, Arab-influenced cuisine, and centuries-old connections to Portuguese explorers and Indian Ocean trade routes.
For travellers who combine a Kenyan safari with time on the coast, Malindi Marine Park represents the perfect conclusion to an inland wildlife journey — a complete sensory shift from dust and grassland to salt air and turquoise water, but with the same spirit of natural wonder and discovery that defines the very best of Kenya’s extraordinary travel offering.
October to March offers the calmest seas, best underwater visibility, and the greatest chance of whale shark encounters. July to September also provides good conditions for most marine activities.
