“Where the rugged crests of the Pare and Usambara Mountains meet semi-arid grey thornbush, Mkomazi stands as Tanzania’s greatest conservation comeback.”
Positioned in northeastern Tanzania along the Kenyan border, Mkomazi National Park was once an overgrazed game reserve facing ecological collapse. Today, through decades of dedicated international collaboration between TANAPA and the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust, Mkomazi has risen as one of the continent’s most triumphant stories of rewilding and endangered species recovery.
The park’s name originates from the Pare tribal word *Mke wa Mazi*, meaning “little water”—a nod to its dry savanna, scattered baobabs, and grey-green Commiphora bushland. In this arid country, wildlife adapted to dry northern ecosystems thrives. It is the only national park in Tanzania where travelers can observe the long-necked gerenuk browsing upright on hind legs, the straight-horned Beisa oryx, and the lesser kudu. At its conservation core lies the heavily fortified **Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary**, where visitors can encounter rare eastern black rhinos at close range, as well as the active **African Wild Dog Breeding Program**.
Every Mkomazi National Park safari operated by Grand World Tours is delivered with uncompromised private field standards. We bypass crowded mainstream routes, deploying custom 4×4 Land Cruisers with veteran naturalist guides who possess intimate knowledge of the sanctuary’s tracks and waterholes. Whether combined with a Kilimanjaro climb, an Usambara hiking retreat, or an overland transit to the Swahili coast, your safari is customized to your preferred pace.
