Machame Route
Machame Route Kilimanjaro: The Iconic Climb to the Roof of Africa
Of all the paths up Africa’s highest mountain, one has earned a reputation above the rest. The Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb is the most celebrated way to reach Uhuru Peak, admired for its scenery, its rhythm and its rewarding sense of journey.
Rising through ancient rainforest, crossing open moorland and passing beneath the great Barranco Wall, Machame shows you almost every face of Kilimanjaro. It is demanding, but it is fair, and for well-prepared trekkers it offers one of the finest mountain experiences in Africa.

A Route of Many Landscapes
Machame begins in dense montane rainforest, where mist hangs between the trees and the air is rich with the scent of moss and earth. As you climb, the forest opens into heather and moorland, then into the wide, wind-swept expanse of the Shira Plateau, with Kilimanjaro’s glaciers glowing above.
The route climbs to the towering rock formation of Lava Tower before descending into the Barranco Valley, a landscape of giant groundsels unlike anywhere else on earth. The next morning brings the Barranco Wall, a hands-and-feet scramble that looks daunting, feels exhilarating and is remembered by nearly everyone who climbs it.
From Barafu Camp, the final ascent begins in the cold, silent hours before dawn, crossing the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak at first light.
Why Machame Works So Well
Machame follows the classic mountaineering principle of climb high, sleep low. On the way to Lava Tower you reach a high altitude, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco. This gentle rhythm helps your body adapt, and it is a major reason why Machame offers a better chance of reaching the summit than steeper, shorter routes such as Umbwe.
An Honest Word About Difficulty
We believe you should know exactly what you are choosing.
Machame is a genuine mountain trek. Days are long, the terrain is steep in places, and summit night is cold, dark and demanding for everyone. It is not a technical climb, and no mountaineering experience is required, but it does require solid fitness, mental determination and proper preparation.
Two further points are worth knowing:
- The 6-day version is faster. The 7-day itinerary adds an extra night for acclimatisation and gives you a noticeably better chance of success. We recommend it for most trekkers.
- Machame is popular. It is one of the busiest routes, so you will share the trail and some camps with other groups. If solitude matters most to you, ask us about quieter alternatives such as Lemosho.
Who Is the Machame Route For?
Machame suits trekkers who:
- enjoy varied scenery and a sense of journey
- have good general fitness and have trained with regular hill walking
- are comfortable with camping and long days on foot
- want a well-proven route with a strong record of summit success
Whether it is your first major trek or your fifth, Machame rewards patience, preparation and a slow, steady pace.
The Grand World Tours Difference
Grand World Tours is a Tanzanian company led by people who know Kilimanjaro from the inside. Success on this mountain depends on pace, hydration and early recognition of altitude symptoms, and that is exactly where experienced guides make the difference.
Your climb includes:
- Experienced mountain guides who read the weather and your condition every step of the way
- A dedicated crew of assistant guides, cooks and porters
- Quality tents, mattresses and a private mess tent
- Fresh, nutritious meals prepared on the mountain
- Daily health checks, including pulse and oxygen monitoring
- A carefully paced plan, with the 7-day option recommended for the best chance of success
Everything is organised for you, so your energy goes entirely into the climb.
Best Time to Climb the Machame Route
Choose the dry seasons: January to mid-March and June to October. Trails are firmer, skies are clearer and summit views are at their best. The rains of March to May and November make the forest sections muddy and the mountain colder and wetter, so we advise against those months. For park details, see the official Tanzania National Parks website.
